Olivia has officially graduated to a big girl bed and it's safe to say she absolutely loves it! She has been sleeping on her Avocado Mattress for 2+ months now and felt it was time I could provide an honest review.
I first realized it was time to transition her out of her crib when I would wake up to loud thumps throughout the night and looked at her monitor to see the poor thing was rolling around and hitting her head on the crib rails! After one night of that, I surprised her the next day to pick out her bed. I really wanted to get her a full size bed so it would last her for a number of years, but after checking the dimensions of the bed she (we) picked out, I realized the full size wouldn't allow for much play space in her room, so decided to go with the twin. Now that the bed frame was ordered, it was time to pick out a mattress!
Insert Avocado Green Mattress.. Parents, we all know how essential sleep in for little ones. Just like us, they require quality sleep.. even more so, for the development of their growing bodies and minds. After doing quite a bit of research online searching for a non-toxic, supportive option, it was a no brainer that Avocado Mattress was THE ONE. It definitely didn't hurt that offer a 1-year sleep trail. Yep. That's right. Avocado Brands offers you to sleep on your mattress up to a year before deciding if it's right for you. How amazing is that?! You can read more about their Sleep Trial here.
To my surprise, Avocado Brands even sells a variety of foundation options to pair with your mattress. All certified organic, eco-friendly and durable to support your mattress.
So, why Avocado? First things first. All of their products are non-toxic, GOTS certified organic. If you think about how much sleep children require (according to pediatricians: ages 3-5 require 11-13 hours of sleep, while ages 5-12 need 10-11 hours), the last thing you want is your child (or you for that matter!) inhaling harmful chemicals. Did you know, children are actually more susceptible to pollutants and harmful chemicals in their environment than adults? This is because their bodies (immune systems) are still growing and developing, and they breathe in proportionately more air.
On top of that, it's known that children have higher heart rates than adults and tend to breathe through their mouths (more so than adults), which increases the risk of which particulates and fibers can be absorbed into the body. This means indoor pollutants, such as certain chemicals, particles and allergens, can cause more severe health effects in children. With that sort of knowledge, it's hard to turn a blind eye to what is actually in the mattress you and your family are sleeping on.
During my mattress search for Olivia, I kept coming across Polyurethane foams (also known as: poly foams, conventional foams, or viscoelastic foams) as the primary ingredient in mattresses. PolyurethaneCome to find out, they're inexpensive to produce (and profitable), so they're commonly found in mattresses marketed for children and teens. If that doesn't upset you enough.. they even come in a wide variety of petrochemical mixes, colors, and brand names — and are sometimes infused with teas, corn oil, soy, or other organic materials to make them appear more "eco-friendly" and "natural." A good tip I learned from Avocado is to ask to view the legal label on the mattress. Be sure to avoid anything that says "eco foam," "bio foam," or "soy foam." I want to extend a BIG THANK YOU to the team at Avocado because they were beyond knowledgeable and answered my 800+ questions without hesitation.
Avocado made my decision far too easy. Non-toxic. organic ingredients, oh and did I mention they are environmentally conscious?! I could go on and on about why I chose Avocado Mattress for Olivia, but I encourage you to do your own research and while you're at it, read this guide they created to help inform parents about the best mattresses for children. It was beyond helpful and informative.
Reach out and let me know if you decide to make the switch! You'll have peace of mind knowing what your little one is sleeping on and a happy well-slept kiddo. :)
